Ex-Cougar Diedrick dead at 46 Charles Michael (Chuck) Diedrick, who set school kicking records at Washington State University, died Saturday in a Galveston, Texas, hospital. Diedrick, 46, the son of Bill and Lil Diedrick of Spokane, developed an aneurysm and died unexpectedly, his father said Tuesday. Services are Friday at 10am at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Spokane. Diedrick was born on April 23, 1955. He attended Ferris High School and Spokane Falls Community College before transferring to WSU. As a junior there in 1975, he kicked a school-record four field goals, including a 47-yarder in an 18-14 victory over University of Kansas. That record still stands, although Diedrick shares it with three who came later – Paul Watson, Rian Lindell and Jason Hanson. Diedrick also holds the WSU record for conversion kicks in a game, 12, against Idaho in ’75. “He still had his old Cougar jersey, No. 33,” said his father. “He wanted to be buried in it. That’s what we’re going to do.” Chuck Diedrick moved to Texas after his graduation in 1977 and worked at a probation officer. He was with the juvenile detention center in Galveston. “I just wanted to try and help kids,” Diedrick said in an interview last September. Diedrick’s brother, Bill Jr., of Palo Alto, Calif., is an assistant football coach at Stanford University. Diedrick is also survived by his sister, Andrena, and her husband, Dennis Hansen, of Spokane, and sister Carol and husband Rick Magnuson, also of Spokane. He also leaves longtime friend Norman Moreno of Galveston and two godchildren, Tara Hansen and Roy Powell Jr. Memorial contributions may be made to Poor Clare Nuns, 4419 N.
