KELLY, Terrence "Terry" T. Sr. (Age 73) Was born April 15, 1934 and passed away in Spokane, WA on April 10, 2008. A deeply-rooted Spokane native, Terry attended school, worked, married and raised two sons here. He graduated from St. Aloysius Grade School and Gonzaga Prep, received his Bachelors Degree in English from Gonzaga University and Masters Degree in Education from Whitworth. Terry's own love of learning blossomed in high school and he became a dedicated educator, teaching English for 30 years in local schools, Libby Jr. High, Riverside, Ferris and Shadle Park High Schools. His peers remember him as a great person, wonderful to work with, and an excellent teacher who cared deeply about the progress of his students. Students mentioned his awareness of their particular needs, making sure they understood the subject. In addition to teaching, Terry was the coach of the Rifle Club, having become an expert marksman himself when he served as 2nd Lt. in the U.S.Army. He and his childhood sweetheart, Joyce Hoerner, enjoyed fifty years of marriage, friendship and devotion to each other. They took great joy in life with their sons Scott and Terry, Jr. who died suddenly last year. Terry's family was his priority, and as a father, he took time to be involved in his boys' interests, from butterfly collecting to working on cars or dabbling in chemistry. They all doted on their dogs. The family stayed close with great celebrations for birthdays and holidays. After his retirement in 1989, Terry got serious about his hobbies. Fishing in British Columbia, he caught a twenty pound salmon. A curious gardener, he experimented grafting fruit trees, even incorporating a branch of the summer transparent apple tree from his childhood home on Sharp Ave. He and Joyce designed and nurtured beautiful flower gardens, raising stunning Nikki Blue hydrangeas. Pursuing another creative interest, he set up a shop for casting and painting miniature lead figures of soldiers from historical battles. He was an active volunteer with the Community Oriented Police Substation (COPS).
