Woman receives closely matched new kidney

Marcia Nudell, 25, of Spokane, yesterday received a transplanted kidney so closely matched to her own that it was almost like have her own kidney back.

She was in excellent condtion after the 4am transplant operation at Univesity Hospital.  The kidney was flown here from Miami.  It was taken from a Tampa donor who died Wednesday night.

A national computer program identified the Spokane woman, sho has been on a kidney machine for four years, as the most compatible recipient.  She was notified and was driven here for the surgery.

The match, known as an A match, is believed to be only the first or second such match in the country.

The kidney also was flown the farthest for any transplant in the Pacific Northwest.  It was aboard a flight which arrived at 11pm Thursday.
