LYSNE, Laurence Merrell 1966 - 2011 Larry passed away peacefully at sunrise on May 14th, 2011, after a courageous six year battle with a rare form of cancer. He was born September 23rd, 1966, in Portland, Oregon to Linda and Art Lysne. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. The family then moved to Spokane in 1972. Larry began his school years at Lincoln Heights Elementary, Hamblen Park Elementary, and Sacajawea Middle School. He graduated from Ferris High School in 1984. He was on the track and cross country teams and would later use his fitness regimen to complete two Coeur d'Alene Marathons. After graduation, he enlisted in the USMC under the "buddy" system with his best friend, Todd. He was trained as an avionics specialist and received an honorable discharge in 1988. Upon returning to Spokane, he worked at SHMC as a monitor tech. It was there at SHMC that he met the love of his life, Shannon, when they were dance partners in Heart Follies. They were married in 1990. They have two children; Ryan who will be entering the Univ. of Oregon in the fall, and Lauren, "girlfriend" to her dad, who will be graduating from Ferris HS in June and will start classes at SFCC in the fall. Larry left SHMC to begin a career in law enforcement with the Kootenai County Sherriff's Dept after completing training at the Police Academy in Boise. They lived in Coeur d'Alene where he spent two years with the county sheriff's dept while completing a two year RN program at NIC. But his heart called him back to the medical profession. So he returned to SHMC/Holy Family Hospitals and began his career in the CICU dept at Sacred Heart while taking classes at ICNE/WSU to complete his four year RN degree. He was hired by MedStar and continued to pursue his educational goal to earn a masters degree as a nurse anesthetist (CRNA), graduating in May 2005 from Gonzaga University. He returned to SHMC and continued to work in his profession until Nov. 2009. While at SHMC, he also served as an instructor for the CRNA program at Gonzaga. He served on the Admissions committee for the Gonzaga CRNA program until February 2010. He was a member of the Washington State Board of Nursing for Nurse Anesthetists and was a representative to Washington DC every April to lobby for the state organization. He belonged to the American Association for Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), and an endowment fund was established in his name in April 2011 for leadership scholarships to be awarded to students earning their CRNA degree in eastern Washington and the west side. He was awarded Most Favorite Instructor by the students in the Gonzaga CRNA program, and served as a Capt. in the U.S. Army Reserves until he could no longer serve and was granted an Honorable Medical Discharge. Family came first with Larry, and he loved the soccer games, dance recitals and many wonderful trips they took together over the years. He was passionate about his profession as a CRNA and dedicated to the mission of providing excellent care and compassion to those patients he served. Published on 5/25/2011
