Anchorage resident Tony Gene Hardt, 45, died July 2, 2009 surrounded by his loving family at Providence Alaska Medical Center after a courageous battle fighting myotonic dystrophy.

Mr. Hardt was born Jan. 8, 1964 in Spokane, Wash., to Donald Gene Hardt and Marlene Gail Poulson. In 1982, he graduated from Joel E. Ferris High School in Spokane, where he was president of the Spanish club, played junior varsity tennis, and enjoyed being on stage (drama). Tony enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1983 as a medical corpsman and was medically discharged in 1985. Tony was employed by Clear Channel Radio in Anchorage for many years. He married Kerri Lasut in 2002. He graduated from the University of Alaska Anchorage with a bachelor's degree in justice in 2005. Tony loved watching movies, being with his children and family, reading, and writing poems and short stories. He sent his mother and daughters a wake-up e-mail note and poem almost every day around 4 a.m. It made their day special.

He is survived by his wife, Kerri Hardt; sons, Dallas Hardt and Austin Hardt-Poulson; daughters, Savannah Hardt-Poulson and Bethany Hardt-Thurston, all of Anchorage; brother, Ty Hardt; sisters, Terri Thurston of Anchorage and Tammi Sherrer of Big Lake; his mother, Marlene Poulson; and step-father, Harold Poulson of Anchorage; and by many nieces and nephews. Mr. Hardt was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Elinor "Babe" Adams; and his father, Donald Gene Hardt. Donations may be made in Mr. Hardt's name to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Tony donated his body as a gift to science in hopes of finding a cure for this disease.
